Pair of American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus) mating in a Pawlet pond. The smaller male is on top of the female — wrapping his front legs around her chest to hold on, releasing his sperm to fertilize the eggs she releases.
Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum).
Sessile Bellwort (Uvularia sessilifolia).
Downy Yellow Violet (Viola pubescens).
Common Green Darner (Anax junius) dragonflies mating at the edge of a Pawlet pond. The male uses claspers at the end of his abdomen to grasp the female behind the neck. Mating pairs can often be seen flying in tandem. The Green Darner is one of the largest and most common dragonfly species in North America.
